Named lots, a chalked board, tally chips that mean nothing outside the room and a floor host who has heard every question already.
The floor
How a lot is run
Seven tables run open: your name goes on the board and a seat comes up in order, usually within a lot.
Three tables are called ahead by phone for groups of up to eight. They are held until the second lot opens and then released to the board.
Chips are issued at the top of each lot and counted back at the end of it. The chalk is wiped, the tables reset, and the next lot starts clean.
What gets played
Five hundred, euchre, crib and friendly hold'em — points only.

By the rostrum. Schooling on Tuesday, quiet play the rest of the week.

- How many to a table?
- Eight at the called tables, six on the open ones, four at schooling.
- Can I come alone?
- Most of the floor does. Put your name up and the host will seat you.
- Can I bring my own deck?
- The house supplies every card in the building.
- Is there a competition?
- A friendly one across the Friday lots. No entry fee, no prize money, your name in chalk.
